In 18th-century France, the finest decorative objects were never purely French, nor purely Eastern. They were something more interesting: a conversation between two civilizations, conducted in porcelain and gilded bronze.
The Sèvres Chinoiserie Collection brings together a suite of decorative objects conceived in that spirit. The porcelain bodies follow the decorative language of the great Sèvres manufactory, white grounds painted with blue florals, pink ribbon swags and delicate crackle glazing that speaks of age, refinement and the long tradition of French court ceramics. The ormolu mounts tell a different story. Cast with Chinoiserie figures, orientalist motifs and scrolled baroque metalwork, they place each piece at the exact intersection where European grandeur met its fascination with the East.
The result is a collection that belongs to no single tradition and is richer for it.
