The orientation of the Current Transformer (CT) is crucial for accurate readings and proper protection.

You'll usually find markings on the CT body like:

P1/P2 or K/L. On the secondary: S1/S2. The common rule is:

P1 or K → Source side

P2 or L → Load side. This means current enters at P1 and exits at P2.

Example: If you have a panel:

Power is coming from the main breaker to the motor or load,

then:

P1 should be pointed towards the breaker/source, and P2 towards the load.

What if it's connected backward?

The current might read negative in some devices. The power and power factor might be affected. Directional protection might trip incorrectly. Some meters might register in reverse. Very important note: Never leave the secondary of the CT open while it's operating. It must be:

Connected to a meter/relay or Short-circuited.
