STORY
My name is Ana Sofia, I did my bachelor in industrial design at Ecal (école d’art de Lausanne). This project Started In 2014 when I was in the second year of my bachelor degree. Our professor, Michel Chalrot, (An Industrial Designer based in Portugal), announced a collab with a Milanese lighting company that wanted a new product for their brand. They asked to work with us on this project. Luceplan, was this company.
The topic was to make a new design for a led lamp. After some research of models, I found what I really wanted. Origami was a unique form that I was always interested in. The Final prototypes remind me of my Mexican origins. Their anatomy is similar to that of a cactus, and they cast a silhouette familiar to what you would see from the plant itself. “Echinopsis” is the name of my final product, it is a type of cactus that we find there in Mexico. after I finished my bachelor, my father wanted a new lampshade.
That is when I was inspired to go back to the drawing table for a new design. I ended up creating another special piece that was along the lines of origami... But, then his friends wanted one too! So, I decided to launch my own workshop. I set up in my family’s summer house on Lake Geneva in Meillerie, France. I continued fulfilling their requests, and the response for these new models from the public was simply incredible. Now, i also make other pieces for special requests, anywhere from lights to furniture and from tables to chairs!
