Alta Via 4 trip report by Susan from .club

September 21 - Day 5
Rifugio San Marco > Pieve di Cadore

Last day on the AV4 and another blue sky, warm day. Another sunrise with beautiful colours over Monte Pelmo, to the West of Rifugio San Marco.

I set off in the morning shade for the first climb up to Forcella Piccola. After only an hour on the trail, I stopped at Rifugio Galassi, a volunteer-run hut for a snack and takeaway lunch. They were so lovely, giving me an extra slice of cake to prepare me for my long day. The sandwich was also made with warm fresh made bread!

The climb up to the start of Ferrata Ghiaccio was spectacular. There was a large herd of steinboch (mountain goats) and chamois (small deer) lazing in the sun.

The ferrata was straight up the rock face! Although it wasn’t technically difficult, I was feeling pretty exhausted so took my time. At the top I was rewarded with spectacular views of the glacier and small glacier-fed blue lakes. One of my favourite views of the trip!

The next section of trail was lush and green, passing through some meadows with cows. It was also quiet, with only a handful of other hikers along the route.

A beautiful balcony trail led down to Rifugio Angelo, where I bumped into some fellow Dutch AV4 hikers. After a cold drink and a snack, we finished the final 10km together, finishing in Pieve di Cadore.

I was very happy to stay in town, with a hot shower, comfy bed and delicious food.

In the morning, I was waiting for the bus in the town center and I was approached by someone asking if I just hiked the AV4 and gave me an AV4. A little trail magic to finish my amazing 5 days ✨

September 19 - Day 3
Rifugio Fonda Savio > Rifugio Vandelli

Another early morning sunrise with perfect clear skies. After a tasty breakfast and farewells to new friends, I set off to tackle 2 mountain passes straight off the bat.

The passes were a lot of fun with cables to assist, a few ladders and some tricky scree to navigate. Once popping over Forcella Misurina, there was the lake of the same name down in the valley and distant views over to Averau, Nuvolau and Tofana (along the AV1).

I stopped at Rifugio Col de Varda for coffee and strudel and decided to skip the gondola/bus combo and hike through the forest to start the hike up to Sorapis lake. I’m glad I did because it was so lovely to walk amongst the trees in the shade to avoid the hot sun!

I tried to get lunch three times, but failed. One hut wasn’t serving lunch yet, the other was closed and the last had finished serving lunch. Damn! So I settled for my back-up rice crackers and almond butter.

The hike up to Sorapis lake was pleasant in the trees, but was a steep and eroded trail. After a steady climb, the lake (and the crowds!) came into view. Wow - pretty spectacular!

I decided to check into the hut first, which paid off as I was first to choose my bed in the dorm. Score! By 5pm only a few day hikers were left at the lake which made it so special. The benefits of staying at the hut!

A great meal with new Dutch and American friends, as well as chatting to Sabrina and Alberto the guardians about how popular Sorapis lake has become over the past 10 years. During peak July/August period, there were 3,000+ people per day visiting the lake! I feel even more lucky to have experienced it when there were only the ~30 other people staying at the hut overnight.

Hey everyone 👋 Susan here from .club

I’ve snuck in a last minute Dolomites trip to end the hiking season. I’m spending 7 days here, 5 on AV4 and 2 on AV1. Hope you enjoy the content!

September 17: Day 1
San Candido > Rifugio Locatelli

Add-on routes:
- Ferrata Torre di Toblin
- Ferrata De Luka
- Ferrata Innerkofler

What a spectacular day to kick off the trip. Starting in San Candido with a pleasant walk along the river amongst the trees. Then turning up past farmland and lush meadows.

Once reaching Rifugio Tre Scarperi, the steep, rocky climb begins. After a big ascent, Tre Cime finally appears.

I arrived at lunchtime so had plenty of time to add on nearby ferrata routes.

First I went up Ferrata Torre di Toblin which was a fun summit with ladder sections within tight chasms. View from the top was spectacular.

Next up was hike up through 600m of WWI tunnels (headlamp and helmet very handy!). Ferrata de Luka leads up to Monte Paterno (2,744m) providing 360 degree views across Tre Cime, north in Austria and surrounding peaks.

To complete the loop, I followed Passportensteig, a narrow balcony trail and finished with Ferrata delle Forcelle and a very narrow, short tunnel. So short that I had to crawl through! That was an experience.

Staying at Rifugio Locatelli was the perfect end to the day. Crowds disappeared, wonderful sunset and a delicious meal was served!

Question about AV4 or Tre Cime? Pop it in the comments!
