Some projects stick with you - this 12-foot-tall hall tree was one of them 🌳

I designed and built this piece for a client living in a beautifully converted 100+ year old church in Niagara. This historic property had so much soul - I really sought to create not only an effective storage solution, but a piece that felt like it had always been there. Tall, grounded, and full of quiet presence - as though it grew there!

This piece was lovingly built in solid maple, and quality cabinet grade plywood. Anyone who knows me knows that zero MDF, particle board, etc are used in a Wood Art by Will.

Trim details around the home were noted and reflected in the build, and the bench was even stained to match the original church pews. Though spray finishing produces a beautifully flat-out finish, it just wouldn't have sat right amidst the brush strokes in the trim around the home, so we opted to paint this unit out by hand :)

This is all to say, every detail was chosen to honor the character of the home. This piece isn’t just for coats - it’s for the story this home continues to tell.

Resurfacing an existing staircase is a hassle-free, cost-effective way to update your space with a lifetime solution! With this project, the devil was in the details. I milled the solid hickory treads and poplar risers in my shop, matching the tread profiling to an existing molding appearing throughout the home.

The home owners had removed their carpet, but were keen to keep the original railing. This being the case, our millwork got a custom color match in keeping with the railing tone prior to installation.

Wood Art by Will retrofit stair systems install quickly, and can be walked on immediately, making them an excellent solution for the occupied home. Since I make all my stair components by hand in my shop and personally carry out all my own installs, the possibilities are endless. In the case of this stair - which was the first thing you see upon entering the home - this attention to detail made all the difference!

THREE Wood Art by Will staircases in this home renovation!

Very happy to share these pieces! Stairs are one of my favorite things to build. I had SO much fun designing, building and installing these updated, safer staircases, in some of my favorite styles of stair!

These stairs feature hardwood oak treads, stained a beautiful graphite grey, with paint-grade poplar stringers, risers, skirt boards, etc. (to be painted out in white).

From stairs to cabinetry, trim carpentry, or the same great custom furniture as always, Wood Art by Will is always more than happy to help! If you have a project on your mind, it's never to early to get in touch.

More about the featured project: the original staircases had been subjected to decades of DIY attempts, leaving them with built up layers of [poorly applied] finishing materials, squeaks, and - the most concerning - inconsistent rises / discrepancy between steps. For these home-owners' future retirement home, they simply wouldn't do! After seeing (and walking on) one of my smaller flights of stairs, the home-owners asked me to build all the stairs for their entire home.
