This stunning Manitoba Burr Oak table has definitely been on a journey.
The slabs were generously donated by and I had the privilege of turning them into this one-of-a-kind piece that I had full design choice over (a challenge in of it self) for a great cause.
I mentioned on my last project that it was probably my favourite piece I’ve built to date but I think this one might have just taken the top spot. Between the character of the burr oak, the scale of the build, and the story behind it, this table is something special.
It started with milling down massive 3-inch-thick slabs to a finished 1¾-inch top. Then came the panic when the epoxy fill decided not to cure just two days before delivery (probably a me issue) After a lot of troubleshooting, some very late nights, and a few walnut patches to save the day, this table finally came together exactly as it was meant to.
Furniture making isn’t always smooth sailing. Sometimes it’s problem-solving, adapting, and putting in the extra hours to make sure the final product is something you’re proud to put your name on. This project definitely tested me, but seeing the finished result makes every challenge worth it.
This table will be featured as a VIP table at a major fundraiser in Selkirk this weekend for a fantastic not-for-profit organization that supports causes throughout Selkirk and beyond. At the end of the evening, it will be auctioned off, with every dollar raised going right back into the community.
After all the hard work and countless hours invested, knowing this piece will help make a difference makes it all worthwhile.
A beautiful table, a great cause, and a community coming together to make an impact. That’s what it’s all about.
