The Difference Between Scam Locksmiths And Real Locksmith

When an emergency strikes and you’re locked out of the house, office or car, most people tend to search google for a local locksmith. You’re in a rush, we get it, but it’s important to realize that not all locksmiths are created equal! Hiring a new trades-person, whether it’s a locksmith or a plumber, is tricky business as you don’t know who to trust but spend a little time researching before you rush into what could be a scam. Not all locksmiths are linked to legitimate businesses and the difference in terms of quality, reliability and ongoing service you’re likely to receive from them compared to a brand such as Quickly Locksmith is huge!

Scams:

Many of the search results that turn up on google aren’t in fact legitimate companies. Many of the phone numbers will link to generic call centers abroad in countries such as India and high freelance amateurs that have received little to no formal training, certification or checks. The minute these so called ‘locksmith companies’ receive your request, it is transferred to a subcontractor who will receive your name, address and phone number. Along with questionable locksmith services you’ll also probably start receiving cold calls offering to be sold other rubbish too – you’re welcome.

Scam artists will often quote ridiculously low prices that reflect the low-quality jobs they will perform. Those ‘$30 -$40 locksmith’ adds that pop up in google or Facebook market place shouldn’t be trusted – they have no insurance, no certification and no liability. They’ll almost certainly not be accurate either and when someone arrives to carry out the work will claim something isn’t right and they need to charge extra to get the job done. When its an emergency, your pushed for time and someone is standing in front of you claiming to be an expert, you’d be forgiven for taking their word for it and going ahead.

Trusted locksmiths:

A trusted locksmith company on the other hand will have no problem giving a free price estimation over the phone and sticking to it later because they are experienced and know what they are doing. If it’s not possible to give an accurate quote over the phone, they’ll let you know they really need to see things first. When they arrive, the job will be carried out by an experienced and professional technician – the difference is clear.

Please take our advice and call a reputable and well-reviewed locksmith company such as Quickly Locksmith. We’re fully insured and liable for all work carried out on your property and our customer base speaks for our reliability.

You’ll also have the added benefit of never having to worry again – if you ever need a locksmith again, or indeed a security expert for any other project, you’ll have Quickly’s phone number saved!

Different Types of Car Keys

Car keysThere are many situations when you may need to replace your car keys. The transponder may stop responding, the key could break in the ignition, your keys were stolen, or maybe the keys were simply lost. Knowing what kind of key you have is beneficial in anticipating the possible costs for replacing lost, stolen, or broken keys.

Traditional Key

The traditional key is the most basic type of key. They are typically found on older cars and don’t have any encoding. This type of key can be made with many machines used to cut metal, using die punch or other methods.

Master Key

Many early cars were equipped with a master key intended to be used to make copies or replacement keys for a car. It was not intended for normal use. Master keys were hundreds of dollars to replace, and sometimes it was necessary to replace the whole engine management system, potentially costing thousands of dollars. Most cars nowadays do not come with master keys, however, if you purchase a used car, double check the owner’s manual to see if you should be receiving a master key with the other keys.

Transponder Key

This type of key has a microchip in the key handle, and are more secure than the traditional car key. Transponder car keys have been used since 1995. When inserted into the ignition, a sensor responds and activates the transponder.
Another type of transponder key is the rolling code key. Introduced in 1999, this key sends a new code every time the car is used, protecting the car more securely than traditional transponders. Replacing this type of key is very expensive, typically $500 or more per key.

Switchblade Key

A switchblade key is a key that folds within itself much like a switchblade knife. Typically, there is a button that will pop out the key for use.

Valet Key

Some cars come equipped with a key specifically for valets. This key allows the owner to give a key to a valet that will only unlock the doors and start the car. It cannot open the trunk, glove box or perform other functions.

Smart Key

A smart key is a fob that when it is within range of the car, it will enable the car to turn on by the press of a button. It does not need to be inserted into the ignition.

It is always a good idea to keep an extra key on hand or at home. Sometimes when keys are lost or stolen, it may be necessary to completely replace the locking system in your car. That can cost thousands of dollars in materials and labor. In emergency situations, contact a mobile locksmith to help you out of the bind. It will be less of a hassle and will cost less than towing your car to a dealership.

Key Warning Light (Red)
What does the red key warning light do and why is it on?
The red key warning light means there is a security error code. This light illuminates when the vehicle control modules see the ignition turned with a key that is not programmed to the vehicle or when there is an error within the security protocol of the vehicle’s security system.

Common reasons for this to happen
Faulty key
Dead key fob battery
Faulty key antennae
Faulty control module
Electrical interference
Can I drive with the red key warning light on? (Can I drive in Fail-Safe Mode?)
In most cases, the vehicle will not start when the red key warning light is illuminated. It will have to be towed to a repair facility capable of programming and servicing the security system of your specific vehicle.

How do I fix a red key warning light?
Replace the key fob battery
If the concern persists, you will have to tow the vehicle to a repair facility capable of servicing your vehicle’s security system.
Another option is to have a mobile key programmer to come to you and service the vehicle.
