At JMI, we believe great homes should feel inviting, not perfect. The best homes are made for living and the imperfections are part of the story. They’re unique and interesting, full of pattern, color and texture. Great homes evolve and tell a story about who lives there. They are personal, yet all who visit feel instantly at home.

Design details are what make a project feel personal.

Here are my five favorites from Project Willard. ✨
1. Coffered ceiling — The HVAC placement on one side created the perfect opportunity to add a coffered ceiling on the other. It includes a beautiful trim detail that feels completely at home with the history of this house.
2. Walnut island — An absolute showstopper. The warm wood tone plays so well against the blue, and those turned legs bring just the right amount of old-world charm.
3. Stained glass — The home already had stunning original stained glass on the main and second floors. We commissioned new glass for above the hall entrance and between the dining room and new living space — a nod to what was already there.
4. Panelled appliances — When appliances look like furniture, everything just belongs.
5. Unlacquered brass hardware that adds sparkle and will patina over time. We also used the same finish for the pendants and sconce.

At JMI, we create homes that are welcoming, personal, and layered — full of pattern,
texture, moody moments, and gorgeous filtered light. Always a touch of luxury, always distinctly yours.

If you’re ready for a change in your space, we’d be honoured to be part of the journey.

Palette & Finishes ✨
With our objectives and space plan locked in, the real fun begins — sourcing the palette and finishes.
We started with the existing flooring that flows in from the living and dining areas, letting that set the tone. From there, cabinetry was our anchor piece. My client had her heart set on powder blue, and after many (honestly, head-spinning) samples, we landed on BM Watercolor — absolutely worth the search. To balance the blue, we brought in caramel-toned wood for the island and pantry. That warmth was exactly what the blue needed.
From there, every element fell into place: stone with gorgeous gray veining, a zellige backsplash for texture, a sweet yellow-and-blue café curtain, and unlacquered brass hardware that will beautifully patina over time. In the adjacent living area, we carried through hits of blue and saddle-colored leather — all intentionally textured to add depth and richness.
✏️ Designer’s note: As you build your sample board, always consider the eventual scale of each piece in the room. A small leather swatch representing a full sofa reads very differently at size — keep that in mind!
The goal? For everything to simply feel good together. 🤍

From Vision to Reality: The Space Planning Process 🏠✨
After defining our project objectives and curating mood boards, the real magic begins — space planning. It’s a months-long, ever-evolving process that doesn’t rest until the final millwork plans are signed off. Here’s how it unfolds:
1. Site Measure & Existing Plans 📐
We kick things off with a comprehensive site measure and draw the pre-demo room, importing any existing plans the client has on hand. Pro tip: those existing plans are almost always off on measurements!
2. 2D Layout & Zoning 🗺️
We explore layout options, mapping out zones, cabinetry, and appliance placement post-demolition. Doors, windows, workflow, and focal points (hello, range wall!) all factor in — and once demo is underway, we get a clearer picture of any structural surprises like plumbing or electrical constraints.
3. 3D Visualization 🖥️
This is where the kitchen comes to life. We assess flow, movement, door swings, and sightlines — factoring in family size and how many people will be cooking or entertaining. General rule: aim for 36” pathways minimum, but 42” is the sweet spot.
4. Millwork & the Details 🔩
With the plan locked in, we collaborate with our millworker to map out every last detail — from pots, pans, and spices to recycling stations, HVAC, electronic drawers, tray dividers, and of course, those beautiful display elements.
A kitchen build may take just 6–8 weeks once demo begins, but it’s built on months of thoughtful pre-planning. The goal? Having everything in place before a single wall comes down. 🙌

Every great project begins with a clear vision. 🏛️ For Project Willard, we established three core objectives to guide our journey from concept to completion:
1️⃣ Traditional Style: the kitchen and adjacent lounge space should complement the age of the home, leaning into a timeless, traditional aesthetic.
2️⃣ Bright & Warm: using powder blue cabinetry (my client consistently used the term “happy” to describe it) and warm oak accents, to create a casual, inviting space for family and friends. 💙
3️⃣ Functional Details: we prioritized creative storage solutions tailored specifically to the room’s dimensions.

These principles kept us on track and ensured every detail served a purpose.

This is one of the final shots from the Willard to-the-studs kitchen and adjoining living area renovation. As tempting as it is to just post a carousel of gorgeous shots, I’m going to do things a bit differently this time. As I share the images, I’ll also be including the process and design rationale. There are A LOT of decisions made along the way. So stay tuned….

If you have any specific questions about the reno process, comment below or send me a dm.
