Have you ever seen white oak look like this?
This tree’s heart was gone, completely decomposed in the core. The new growth that followed is what created the magic in its original grain characteristics.
The centre had rotted away, completely void from decay. The aftermath of the trauma is where lies the magic. Just like where darkness meets light, and rain converges with sunshine. The slabs that surrounded the damaged core capture a story of resiliency. As the grain turned inward and wrapped around the void, it created one of a kind figures and spalt patterns. That’s what you’re seeing here, and it’s far from typical in white oak. It’s the injury/illness that gave this tree all its character.
At Rubenovitch Furnishings & Co., we seek out those rare moments of transformation and characteristics in trees.
In this piece, you’re seeing figured grain + spalt and the story of the tree’s transformation.
We are humbled to have the fortune to have a handful of pieces from this tree.
At Rubenovitch Furnishings & Co., we don’t just source wood, we curate it. We seek those specimens where adversity sparked beauty, where nature’s trauma gave way to something extraordinary.
