This is a good example of the 7 layers for food production.
An example is the apple tree guild. Under the trees outermost leaves a ring of daffodils mixed with garlic, onions, carrots, etc. Inside of that is lush patches of comfrey (bee attractor for good pollination), mixed with yarrow (nutrient accumulator), dill, chicory, nasturtium (beneficial insect food/home). All this can be changed around but its the idea that is meant to inspire! Some (most) plants want to co-exist.

We've been asked about manure lately, and that gets me thinking about soil life...
Healthy compost is a perfect example of good habitat. The picture below is a perfect example of the ecosystem, but it does leave out a few friends...one being fungi, which forests would not exist without. The symbiosis that occurs between plants and bacteria/fungi is truly a great bond. Approximately 40% of a plant's carbs it produces goes threw the roots to feed its soil companions, and they return the favor by making available nutrients that the plant is unable to retrieve itself. Soil life also keeps disease in check....friends? I would think so...
If you want to keep this harmonious duo together...... Don't use chemicals on soil, fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides kill soil life. We recommend Organic...... You'll GROW to love it :)
