It could happen to you too - a recent deck collapse in BC was caused by carpenter ant damage that went unnoticed by the home owners. Check out the CTV segment and please heed this homeowner's warning, inspect your deck thoroughly before using it this spring and call a professional if you have any doubts! (apologies for the mandatory advertising before the clip)

Just in time for deck safety month, a perfect example of how NOT to attach your deck to your house! Can you spot what's wrong with this picture?? 1. The ledger board is nailed to the house - it should be bolted w/ a minimum 1/2" lag bolt every 16" and double bolted at each end. 2. The joist is waaaay too short, creating an improper connection with the joist hanger. 3. The joist hanger is missing 12 of 16 nails!!! Mistakes like this are far too common and are the #1 cause of deck collapse. Issues aren't always obvious at first glance, please be sure to inspect your deck THOROUGHLY this spring before gathering with family and friends. If you have ANY doubts, call a professional for a second opinion before you end up like the deck in the second picture!!!
