This tree or now a sculpture will stand for many centuries and what a human mind can do!

The tallest tree in Wales, a majestic Douglas Fir, stood proudly at Lake Vyrnwy until it was severely damaged by a storm.

Initially, plans were made to cut down the tree for safety reasons. However, chainsaw artist Simon O’Rourke saw an opportunity to transform the tree into a lasting piece of art.

Instead of removing the tree entirely, O’Rourke carved a stunning sculpture known as “The Giant Hand of Vyrnwy.” This artwork symbolizes the tree’s final attempt to reach for the sky.

Using his own hand as a model, O’Rourke meticulously carved the top of the 50-foot stump, creating a giant hand that appears to be stretching upwards.

The project took about a week to complete, with scaffolding erected around the tree to facilitate the intricate work.

The result is a breathtaking tribute to the once-tallest tree in Wales, turning a potential loss into a symbol of resilience and creativity.

Had this piece of butternut for a while now it was cut with a chainsaw mill so it took many hours of sanding to get it to look like it does.
It had a big open fracture that split at the open end so I’ve put a piece of solid wood routed flush into the bottom and lots of glue keeping it there and keeping the two parts physically together other than the epoxy. The legs are solid butternut tapered from chunky at the top to a more delicate bottom.
The fracture was poured with 2” deep pour epoxy with some copper colour added. That was all sanded smooth then I’ve put a 1/8” tabletop epoxy over the whole top that needs to cure now. Then hours of sanding and polishing the tabletop epoxy will be next.

Surgery went well now the healing process hope I wake up feeling way better.

Just made this table for a client.
It is solid ash with a waterfall end then two chunky legs at the other end.

Just made this sofa table for a client who said I knocked it out of the park.
It’s butternut with a very chunky leg that tapers with invisible attachments.
It is 109”x12”x31” tall.

Just finished this coffee table for a client. It has a ash top with two book matched boards and some beautiful figures. The legs are walnut branches that I make a flat square 90 angle so now I can make all legs exactly the same.

Just finished these two walnut crotch benches with a waterfall end and rustic legs. Some epoxy fill in the top one green and one dark pink.
$400 each.

Just finished this spalted maple dodecahedron urn for a clients mother who isn’t dead yet Mary just wanted to be prepared for when her mother does pass away. Also made two keepsake urns for Mary and her brother.
Have not done much with spalted maple and well I Love It! Those beautiful black lines that Mother Nature created.
What is spalted maple? Its maple that is a dead tree and is rotting and this is part of the decay process. One must harvest the tree at tge opportune time.
