Have you ever seen a dahlia so beautiful it genuinely kept you awake at night? That was me the first time I saw the Japanese dahlia Tsuki-no Suzu blooming in my friend’s garden. I came home and could not stop thinking about her.

The soft, relaxed petal formation already makes this variety feel incredibly elegant and artistic… but then you notice the contrasting colour petaloids hidden within every petal. And suddenly you realize this is something truly special.

Contrasting petaloids are one of the rarest and most highly desirable traits in dahlias right now, because they create so much depth, texture, and movement within the bloom. Every petal feels layered, sculptural, and almost hand-painted.

Early in the season she opens in luminous bright pink tones, but when the weather cools down she transforms into the dreamiest desaturated mauve with delicate feathered brushstrokes across every petal. The colour shift alone feels magical.

Honestly, flowers like this remind me why I fell in love with dahlias in the first place. Human hybridization and nature working together to create something completely out-of-this-world beautiful.

Sweden stole a piece of my heart… but Magnolia Nossebro stole all of it. 🇸🇪🌸

Walking into their display garden felt like stepping into a living archive of dahlia history. Jan (dad), and siblings Joel and Sanna — the incredible family behind Magnolia — have spent years collecting varieties from across the world. Their display garden is unlike anything I’ve seen: over 900 dahlia varieties, all growing together in one breathtaking tapestry of form and colour.

It is not just a garden.

It is legacy.

One of the most fascinating parts of our visit was discovering their exclusive Idylle line — 26 varieties built on a very special genetic pool that produces truly extraordinary blooms. Sculptural, refined, and diverse enough that every grower would find “their” Idylle. These are available exclusively through their website within Europe, and seeing the full line blooming together was unforgettable.

We were given the most generous, detailed tour — Swedish introductions, trial beds, and their hybridizing patch filled with upcoming cultivars that absolutely deserve attention.

Spending time with this family felt like sitting at a long table with old friends. Warmth. Passion. Vision. The kind of love for dahlias that instantly connects hearts across countries.

And yes — Dahlia Joel’s Favorite was named after Joel himself. He also played a key role in securing the genetics of Café au Lait Mini (Jolene), the smaller sport of our beloved Café au Lait — something collectors worldwide are grateful for.

Jan… thank you for the 55 much-needed cups of coffee (jet lag was very real ☕️😅) and the most delicious sandwiches with Swedish meatballs. Your hospitality will never be forgotten.

Some visits stay with you forever. This was one of them. 🌸✨
