Last weekend, QHINB was thrilled to have board members attend the “From Marginalization to Visibility: 2SLGBTQ+ Archives and Public Memory” conference at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Thank you to Tourism, Heritage and Culture for the grant funding that made our attendance possible, and to for organizing this wonderful conference.

QHINB is back again to highlight another year of Fur Fest, an annual event created by Larry Dickinson, who founded East Coast Bears. Larry and his partner, Steve Rogers also documented Fredericton Pride events with photos and video. Swipe to see some snapshots from Fur Fest 2001, included in our Larry Dickinson sous-fonds (MC4111/MC10)!

Fur Fest began in 1995 and ran until 2006. For years, the event was held at the Fredericton Wandlyn Inn, until moving to the Crowne Plaza later on. The group defined bears as: people who were, or liked, masculine, hairy men. There are many definitions of what a bear should look like; as far as this group was concerned, it's not just physical, it was emotional and societal too, a fraternal sense of acceptance and belonging, fitting in, feeling sexy and desirable, comfortable in your own skin, and being able to establish a chosen family. All were welcome who were interested in bears.

Il existe de nombreuses définitions de ce à quoi un ours doit ressembler ; en ce qui concerne ce groupe, ce n'est pas seulement physique, c'est aussi émotionnel et sociétal, un sentiment fraternel d'acceptation et d'appartenance, le fait de s'intégrer, de se sentir sexy et désirable, d'être à l'aise dans sa propre peau, et d'être capable d'établir une famille choisie.

Top of the morning to ya! Our Collection and Research Archivist Advisor, Meredith J. Batt, will soon be leaving for Ireland to complete a Master’s degree at the University College Dublin. Meredith is an integral part of the QHINB team, and don’t worry, they will still be working with QHINB from afar! Over the next year, they will still be part of QHINB and working on new projects with us, but hopes to focus more on q***r archiving and ways to help q***r archives manage their records.

Join us in wishing Meredith good luck and thanking them for all of their amazing work! Ireland is lucky to have you!

QHINB is here today with a post! We want to highlight another year of Fur Fest, an annual event created by Larry Dickinson, who founded East Coast Bears. Larry and his partner, Steve Rogers, also documented Fredericton Pride events with photos and video. The first Fur Fest had about 25 participants and included a dance at the Kinsmen Center. By 2006 there were more than 175 bears at the event, and Fur Fest was advertised in the Fredericton City Tourism Guide.

Exciting news! QHINB has been named as Grand Marshall for Saint John Pride this year! A huge thanks to for recognizing us and the work we do for the q***r community. We are beyond grateful and honoured!

On Saturday, Aug. 16, join us as we walk in the Saint John Pride Parade! Everybody is welcome, and we would love to have some more folks to walk with us. The more the merrier! If you want to walk with us, simply send us a message or email us at [email protected].

Don’t want to walk in the parade but would rather watch instead? Keep an eye out for QHINB, we might have some cool swag to handout along the route!

Are you ready for another ? Today we are bringing you the third installment of the FLAGMAG, created by the Fredericton Le****ns and G**s, a community group that was founded by Hal Hinds and others in 1979.

For today’s post, we’ve chosen a few pages that stood out from the April 1981 edition of the newsletter. The first is an advertisement for a FLAG “pool party” held at the Student Union Building on the UNB campus, with prizes for “best tan” (I wonder who won🤔) Another page shows the sporty social scene and calls for folks interested in joining a FLAG baseball league, tennis, and transcontinental bicycle trip for “adventuresome cyclists.” The final page details FLAG’s organizing and hosting of the Annual Atlantic Gay Rights conference, and also their issues with being denied access to a dance space at the Ste. Anne Cultural Centre.

Êtes-vous prêt pour un autre ? Aujourd'hui, nous vous présentons le troisième numéro du FLAGMAG, créé par Fredericton Le****ns and G**s, un groupe communautaire fondé par Hal Hinds et d'autres en 1979.

Pour l'article d'aujourd'hui, nous avons sélectionné quelques pages qui se démarquent dans l'édition d'avril 1981 du bulletin d'information. La première est une publicité pour une « fête à la piscine » organisée par FLAG au Student Union Building sur le campus de l'UNB, avec des prix pour le « plus beau bronzage » (je me demande qui a gagné 🤔). Une autre page montre la scène sportive et sociale et invite les personnes intéressées à rejoindre une ligue de baseball FLAG, à jouer au tennis et à participer à un voyage transcontinental à vélo pour les « cyclistes aventureux ». La dernière page détaille l'organisation et l'accueil par FLAG de la conférence annuelle sur les droits des homosexuels dans l'Atlantique, ainsi que les problèmes rencontrés par l'association qui s'est vu refuser l'accès à une salle de danse au Centre culturel Sainte-Anne.

La table ronde sera animée par Roger G. LeBlanc, docteur en Philosophie de l’École nationale d’éducation physique, de sport et les sciences de l’exercice de la University of Otago en Nouvelle-Zélande depuis 2004. Il est membre de l’équipe de collaborateurs scientifiques de la Chaire Kino-Québec ainsi que le Pôle de recherche interdisciplinaire en diversités et équité (PRIDE) de

l’Université de Moncton. Dr LeBlanc s’intéresse au mieux-être des personnes 2ELGBTQIA+ en Acadie. Récipiendaire de la Chaire de recherche sur le Canada à l’Université de Poitiers en France, Dr LeBlanc est bénéficiaire des Bourses Poitiers-Moncton et Yad Vashem en Israël. Il s’est également mérité Personnalité de la semaine Radio-Canada, le Prix Paul Harris du Club Rotary International et la Médaille de Paix du YMCA. Il est présentement professeur agrégé à l’École de kinésiologie et de loisir.

Les panélistes sont les suivants : Paul Henry LeBlanc, Mattie LeBlanc, Audrée Bélanger, Philip André Collette.
