The flu tried to bench me, but it failed.
I’ve been off the grid for the last few days dealing with a completely draining bout of the flu. It wasn’t pretty, but I’m back, I’m upright, and we are hitting the ground running.
While I was down, the farm took on a life of its own. It’s officially "out of control" back here, so we’re launching a massive site remediation today. By this time next week, this place won't just be clean—it’ll be transformed into the high-yield Urban Farming Lab I’ve been promising.
Tonight’s Mission: We shift from clearing to building. We’re putting together the raised bed planters for the home farm and the first batch for the Cayuga Strong Community Garden.
The team is also behind the scenes tightening up the logistics to ensure the community garden is a total success. Plants won't grow themselves, and we aren't slowing down.
Stay tuned. The transformation starts now.

URGENT: Community Brainstorming Today
If you care about food security, community resilience, or just want to see something grow in Cayuga, you need to be at the Royal Canadian Legion (Branch 159) this afternoon.
We aren't here to talk theory; we are here to build the Cayuga Strong Community Garden and the Urban Farming Lab. We have a massive goal for Victoria Day weekend, and we need hands and minds to make it happen.
The Details:
• Where: Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 159
• When: Today at 2:00 PM
• Who: Anyone who wants to contribute, barter skills, or learn. We are transforming this community from the ground up, and it starts at 2:00 PM sharp.
See you there.

Big things are growing in Cayuga! 🌱
A massive shout-out to our founding partners at Branch 159 Royal Canadian Legion for hosting us this Sunday at 2:00 PM. We are opening the doors to the entire community—if you’ve got ideas for the Cayuga Strong Community Gardens, we want you in the room. This is a true community brainstorm, and everyone is invited to help us shape the future of local food security.
Stick around for the end of the video for a quick update on the progress here at the Urban Farming Lab now that the ground is defrosting. (And please excuse RJ the Rooster in the background—he’s got a few opinions on the project himself and just couldn't keep them to his coop!)
See you at the Legion!

Rest in peace my best friend. Bear we love you so much and will be missed. See again one day.

We have a meeting location.
AN OPEN LETTER TO THE CAYUGA COMMUNITY
Subject: Building a Resilient Cayuga—One Garden at a Time
To our friends and neighbours,
We’ve all seen the rising costs at the grocery store and the growing distance between where our food is grown and where it’s eaten. It’s time we did something about it, right here at home.
We are proud to announce the launch of Cayuga Strong Community Gardens, an initiative dedicated to local food security and neighbour-to-neighbour resource sharing.
Our First Major Partner
Before we even put a shovel in the ground, we have a massive win to celebrate. The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 159 has stepped up as our primary Founding Partner. Charlie Whynacht and the Legion team have generously provided us with a consistent, no-cost meeting space to organize this project. Their support ensures that every cent and every hour we donate goes directly into the soil, not into overhead.
You’re Invited: Our First Planning Meeting
If you have a green thumb, a mechanical mind, a spare tiller, or just a desire to help your neighbour, we need you in the room.
• Where: Cayuga Royal Canadian Legion (Branch 159)
• When: This Sunday, March 22nd at 2:00 PM
What’s on the Table?
We aren’t meeting just to talk; we’re meeting to build a roadmap. On Sunday, we will be hammering out:
• The "Cayuga Strong" Vision: How we bridge the gap between those with land and those with the tools or time to work it.
• Land Logistics: Identifying our first season’s plots—whether they are centralized community beds or backyard sharing models.
• The Resource Audit: We need to know who has the tractors, the heirloom seeds, and the woodworking skills to build our infrastructure.
• The "Spring Sprint": In Plant Hardiness Zone 6B, the clock is ticking. we need to set our April "Work Party" dates now to ensure a large harvest.
• Roles & Responsibilities: We need labour leads, social media coordinators to document our progress, and donation liaisons.
Why Join Us?
Gardening waits for no one. By the end of June, we want to see Cayuga greener and more self-sufficient than it was last year. Whether you have a hundred-acre farm or a balcony with room for one pot, you have a place in this project.
Let’s stop talking about food insecurity and start out-growing it.
We look forward to seeing you Sunday at the Legion.
Regards,
Scott Lead Organizer, Cayuga Strong Community Gardens

Key points of the meeting:
1. The Vision: Why "Cayuga Strong"?
• Goal: Establish the "North Star."
• Discussion: "We aren't just planting seeds; we are building a network where neighbors help neighbours. If someone has a tiller but no yard, and someone has a yard but no tiller, we bridge that gap."
2. Land & Location Logistics
• The Big Question: Where are we digging?
• Discussion: Identify specific plots (public or private) available for the first season. Discuss the "backyard garden sharing" model vs. a centralized community plot.
3. The "Tool & Seed" Barter System
• The Assets: What do we already have?
• Discussion: Create a "Resource Audit." Who has a tractor/skid-steer? Who has extra heirloom seeds? Who is a gardener or the desire to learn? Who is a carpenter who can build raised beds?
4. Roles & Responsibilities (Who's Doing the Work?)
• The Team: We need more than just "gardeners."
• Discussion: We need a Social Media Coordinator (to help with the filming/posts), a Labour Lead (to manage the heavy lifting), and a Donation Liaison (to talk to local businesses for lumber or soil).
5. The "Spring Sprint" Timeline
• The Deadline: Gardening waits for no one.
• Discussion: Since it’s already late March, the clock is ticking for Zone 6B. We need a "Work Party" date for mid-April to start clearing land and prepping soil.
6. Governance & Safety
• The Rules: How do we keep it fair?
• Discussion: Brief talk on how the food is shared. (e.g., "Grow a Row" for the food bank vs. personal harvest).

Back from a supply run! Just got back from Princess Auto with more topsoil and a few extra LED grow lights for the plant starters. We were in the middle of making seed snails for our seedlings when we ran out of soil and realized we needed more lighting to keep everything growing strong.

This year we’re planting a lot of extra seedlings to help support a community garden in Cayuga, so the grow room is filling up fast. Tomatoes, peppers, and plenty more are getting started early so they’ll be ready for the season.

In between that, we’re still working on the elk pen getting it ready for the Urban Farming Lab project. The plan is coming together… but right now the mud and water are definitely winning the battle out there. Spring farming in Ontario at its finest!

We’ll keep the updates coming as the seedlings grow and the garden project takes shape.

Seed Snail Day at Cayuga Strong!

Today we’ve got a serious case of spring fever and the cure is simple… playing in the dirt!

We’re busy making seed snails for the Cayuga Strong Community Gardens, getting hundreds of future plants started and ready to grow. It might look like mud and paper right now, but inside these little spirals are the beginnings of fresh vegetables for our community.

There’s something pretty special about rolling up a little bit of soil, dropping in seeds, and knowing in a few weeks it’ll turn into food for our neighbours.

We’re filming the process today and will post the video when we’re done, so you can see exactly how these little garden powerhouses are made.

Spring is coming… and Cayuga is getting ready to grow!

THE THAW IS HERE. AND IT’S A MESS.
The snow is officially gone in Cayuga, but don’t let the sunshine fool you. Right now, "farming" mostly looks like playing a high-stakes game of Don't Get the Tractor Stuck. (Spoiler: The mud is currently winning 3-0).
Between hauling water, navigating swamp-like fields, and winching machinery out of the muck, the "glamour" of the Urban Farming Lab is currently covered in six inches of mud.
But we aren't stopping. Here’s what’s moving behind the scenes:
• The Elk Pen: We’re clearing and prepping this space to become a core part of the Urban Farming Lab. It’s where the high-yield magic is going to happen, teaching anyone—no matter their age or mobility—how to grow their own lifeline.
• The Nursery: While the fields are a swamp, the indoor starts are hitting the soil. We’re planting seeds daily to stay ahead of the season. If you want to beat food insecurity, you have to start while the ground is still frozen.
• The Learning Curve: I’m currently wrestling with video editing software as much as I am with the mud. I want to bring you guys along for this journey—the wins, the stuck tires, and the dirty hands—so stay tuned while I figure out how to make this "enjoyable" to watch.
• The Cayuga Challenge: We are still pushing hard to secure a location for the Cayuga Strong Community Garden. We have the seeds. We have the "handy" skills. We just need the dirt.
This isn't just about the farm. It’s about our town. When you see the videos of us struggling in the mud, remember why we're doing it: to prove that with a bit of sweat and some shared knowledge, we can take control of our food supply.
Stay muddy. Stay strong.

Going to be doing this very soon on the old elk pen.

You don’t need acres.
You need intention.

Balcony. Porch. Window. Backyard.
God can multiply small beginnings.

Where are you growing from this year?

02/05/2026

Farmers don’t stop in winter — we build. Every animal planter and raised dog feeding station helps fund our Urban Farming Lab, tool maintenance, and food support for seniors and people with disabilities. We’re grateful for the work God has put before us.
