The "Golden" process, known as a "maintenance coat". As far as value for money goes, getting a maintenance coat is the winner. In this house the only issue with the floor were minor surface scratches. Rather than refinish the entire floor we applied two coats of an ultra low shine finish to reduce light bouncing of the floor. From a visual perspective, the scratches disappeared making the floor new again. On a prefinished floor like this, if you don't get the process right the first time ... it's a very expensive fix. The aluminum oxide finish can be close to impossible to get the finish to bond to. Luckily for us, we've done this so many times ... we've got the science locked down. A maintenance coat is approximately 70% cheaper than refinishing so if this is an option for your floor, it's the best way to go.

Sanding this floor was like skating on thin ice. A water leak buckled the floor which needed cutting out and replacing but things got interesting with the material we had to use. The customer had their white oak flooring custom milled with a thinner wear layer so after installation there would be no transition height difference with the tile. However, we needed to sand the newly installed material down to meet the height of the already existing floor which meant taking away most the wear layer. It sucks to remove so much wood but we had to do it. The main thing is we finished the floor to meet the Fred and Sue's exact desire ... a dark floor !

This is the third time we have worked in this house. We installed a new set of stairs and hardwood floor upstairs and then refinished half of his main floor the year before. Then we returned to complete the kitchen. The kitchen island had moved as part of a renovation leaving a small area that had no hardwood. We installed new material where needed and then sanded, stained and coated it to match the existing hardwood floor. We completed this job on a Friday so it was a great way to see the weekend in for both Harry and us. Mission accomplished !

What a fantastic floor to work on. This prefinished maple floor was out of date and needed some love. So we put on our Cupid shoes and got to work ... things got passionate pretty quickly. We striped back the first coat to reveal a beautiful variation of colours and once we finished giving it the final polish we coated it an ultra low shine finish. Needless to say Tamara loved our work almost as much as she loved our coffee mugs.

Stained Brazilian cherry has a heavy red under tone that shows through with most stains. You'll never get rid of the red so the question is, whats the best way to control it. For these samples we used a mixture of black and natural to suppress the reds and pull more of the brown colour out. Lights have a hug affect on the appearance of colour. Warmer light bulbs pull the orange/red colours out and cooler whiter lights emphasize the brown. Either way we can get the colour and look you want.

It took a lot of sand paper to take this prefinished walnut hardwood floor back down to a flat surface but once that part of the process is complete it only gets easier. Walnut has a lot of natural colouring so it's not the type of floor we'd stain. This customer wanted it as light as possible with an easy to maintain low shine finish so we coated it with our flagship high durability finish.

This Brazilian Cherry floor was a tricky one to refinish as I was working solo on this occasion. Hand scraping the corners and edges took the most time as the finish was so tough I had sharpening the scraper blade after each corner. The coating was even more of a challenge as the floor was diagonal laid with lots of detail work around the edges. I had to coat fast and keeping jumping from one side of the room to the other to keep a wet edge on finish. If you don't the keep the finish coat consistent you'll see it in the final product and it doesn't look pretty. Because it's a very hard wood it can be sanded very flat unlike some of the softer woods. It's a great wood for kids and pets but the red tones will always be part of how it appears even when stained.

Refinishing a pre-finished hardwood floor is always going to be a tough job because the factory finish and bevelled edges need grinding off before we can start the finer sanding process. The average pre-finished floor takes about 10 times as much sandpaper to complete. However, it's always worth the effort as maple takes stain beautifully so we always know the final product is going to be amazing.
