Not every live edge slab is ready to become a table. Many develop twists, cups, or warping over time, and simply flattening them isn't always enough.

When needed, I use a specialized process of cutting relief kerfs into the back of the slab, carefully bringing it back to flat, and reinforcing it with hardwood support strips. This helps relieve internal stress and keeps the slab stable for years to come.

Most people will never see the work hidden underneath—but that's where quality craftsmanship makes all the difference. It's the extra time and attention that ensures your custom piece is built to last, not just to look good on delivery.

I've been using Bessey parallel clamps for years, and unfortunately I've had to replace far too many handles. Even with normal hand tightening, the handles tend to crack and break. Bessey includes a hole in the handle for an Allen key, but using additional leverage like that seems like it would only put more stress on the housing and increase the chances of failure.

Recently, I decided to give Vevor's parallel clamps a try, and I've been pleasantly surprised. I've tightened them the same way I've always used my Bessey clamps, and so far the handles have held up perfectly with no signs of cracking or breaking.

Another thing I really like is the handle design. The Vevor handles are larger and more comfortable to grip, making it easier to apply clamping pressure. As an added bonus, the Vevor clamp heads fit directly onto Bessey clamp bars. That means if you already own Bessey clamps with damaged handles, you can simply purchase Vevor clamps and swap the heads onto the bar length you need.

Considering that replacement Bessey handles can cost around $50 each, buying Vevor clamps becomes a much better value. In many cases, you can get two complete Vevor clamps for about the same price as a single Bessey replacement handle.

Based on my experience, Vevor offers a more durable and cost-effective option. If you're tired of replacing broken Bessey handles, they are definitely worth considering.

I have added photos of Bessey clamp handle broken.

The Reality of Custom Woodworking

Some days in woodworking you measure twice… and still cut it too short.
Glue-ups shift. Finishes react weird. Slabs crack. A perfect idea in your head suddenly fights you every step of the way.

And honestly? Some projects make you want to blow the whole thing up and start over. 💥🌪️

But that’s the reality of building custom work by hand.

Wood moves. Machines fail. Designs evolve. Problems show up when you least expect them. What people see in the final photos is the polished piece — not the long nights, mistakes, sanding, rebuilding, and problem-solving behind it.

That’s what makes custom woodworking different.

Every project teaches something. Every setback makes you better. And sometimes the jobs that fight you the hardest end up becoming the pieces you’re most proud of.

The goal isn’t perfection every step of the way.
The goal is refusing to quit when things get messy.
That’s craftsmanship.
