I am proud to announce that this handcrafted Chessboard is on public display and exclusively available through the Leura Fine Woodwork Gallery.

Designed as a centrepiece for connection and play, this chessboard is intended to bring people together, inviting conversation, competition, and shared moments around a beautifully crafted playing surface.

Meticulously handcrafted from Tasmanian Blackwood and Blackbutt, the contrasting Australian hardwoods create a warm and elegant playing field, showcasing the natural figure, character unique to each timber species.

This striking custom chess board was recently received by its proud owner, and it's safe to say they were overjoyed with the final piece!

Measuring in at 495mm square with 60mm squares, this extra large chessboard was tailored to suit the client's carved stone chess pieces whilst simultaneously fitting their existing chess table. Produced from figured American Black Walnut and rift sawn American Rock Maple, the board’s smooth hand sanded surface, complemented with natural kunos oil finish, results in a subtle sheen, illuminating the board with natural light, highlighting the contrasting coloured timbers and the chess piece when in use.

It's been a pleasure to have been commissioned to produce this bespoke custom dining table which was recently completed and delivered to the client.

The design brief was straightforward: “Sean, can you transform this recovered timber from our house into a stunning piece of furniture, something that's functional and showcases the beauty in each board”. After extensive discussions, we concluded that a new dining table was the most suitable piece for the client's home.

Today I am proud to present a piece that not only challenged my skills but resulted in the delivery of a truly stunning piece of furniture. A piece that pays homage to the timber that once was the backbone of this client's into a gorgeous dining table that proudly sits within the same structure.

Measuring 1760mm long, 920mm wide and 740mm high the dining table comfortably seats 6, and up to 8 when required, whilst the table top features a reverse book-matched pattern ensuring symmetry across all aspects of the design. The bespoke base features double tapered legs, which are splayed at 5 degrees in addition to each leg being splayed at 25 degrees from the centre, creating an aesthetically appealing design whilst maintaining functionality. Constructed with traditional joinery techniques, the base features hand-cut, through wedged mortice and tenon joinery revealing the craftsmanship via the visually appealing joints whilst ensuring that this piece will last a lifetime. The underframe features concealed mortice and tenon joinery interlocking the legs, stretchers, and rails, whilst the top is securely fastened to the base with threaded inserts ensuring it remains flat whilst providing sufficient leeway for wood movement. Sanded smooth to 240 grit, this piece has been finished with multiple coats of certified, food-safe Kunos oil produced by Livos Australia, highlighting the contrasting coloured timbers whilst protecting the piece ensuring its longevity.
