At first glance, this project makes no sense.

There was already a staircase.

So why install another one?

The challenge was creating access to a loft without sacrificing the space below or building another permanent staircase.

The solution was a custom Bcompact folding staircase installed directly above the existing stair.

When needed, it opens to provide comfortable loft access.

When not needed, it folds away against the wall, leaving the original staircase fully usable.

Sometimes the best design solutions aren't about removing something.

They're about adding something that disappears.

There’s no music in this video.

In fact, you’ll probably notice the sound of clothing moving more than the stair itself.

And that’s exactly the point.

Most folding stairs and attic ladders feel temporary, noisy, clunky, and awkward to use.

This custom Bcompact stair was designed differently.

One of the best parts of what we do is seeing how different people use their spaces.

So far this year, we’ve worked on projects ranging from tiny homes and loft bedrooms to mezzanines, studios, storage spaces, and full architectural renovations.

One of the things architect Miguel Gummavitta kept coming back to during our conversation was the precision behind the handrail design.

At first glance, it looks simple.

But engineering a bi-folding handrail system that moves smoothly with the stair, folds compactly, and still feels solid and refined takes an enormous amount of design consideration behind the scenes.

During this bathroom renovation, hidden space above the ceiling was uncovered. Instead of ignoring it, Miguel saw an opportunity to create something functional, unexpected, and beautifully considered.
