Some shifts stay with you. A tough call, a decline, a client who's frightened and can't say why.
Support workers carry that home more often than they let on. Good teams don't pretend otherwise.
A few things that help:
โข A real debrief - not 'you ok?' in passing, but five minutes that mean it.
โข Permission to say a shift was hard without it becoming a performance issue.
โข Someone checking in the next day, not just in the moment.
โข Knowing where to point people when it's bigger than a chat.
Looking after the people who look after everyone else isn't soft. It's how you keep them.
How does your team support each other after a hard shift?
