The case of the phantom fault 👻🕵️♂️
This Ford Ranger had already been to a few mechanics before it landed in our shop. The symptom? It drives perfectly fine—until it is under load around 3000 RPM, where it would start surging.
The only code on the dash was for a cylinder 4 glow plug (which is not related).
After extensive road testing and live data logging, we finally caught the culprit. Under heavy load, the Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) sensor was spiking to a massive 1000°C! To protect the engine, turbo, and DPF from melting, the ECU was cutting fuel—causing that mysterious surging.
The Checklist:
Fueling checked ✅️
Boost checked ✅️
EGR checked ✅️
DPF checked ✅️
EGT Sensor checked 👎 💥
One new sensor later, and this Ranger is back to 100%, driving smooth under any load. Don't just read codes—read the data! 💪
