Our customer base is diverse in terms of industry sectors however we have initially been working closely with sole traders and small companies with up to 30 employees testing our software design and gaining an understanding of the practical issues associated with engaging digital technologies. We have found that people will work towards embracing technology when they realise that they can meet their objectives in a paperless environment. Working with lean workforces in developing our solution has clearly had a positive impact on the development and seamless implementation of our system across our growing customer base.

Revaluing On-the-Job Learning

For centuries before the rise of educational institutions, everyone learned on the job. An aspiring blacksmith learned his trade by working alongside a master craftsman as people did in other industries and jobs.

On-the-job learning is still happening today however through a combination of factors it has been swept aside and discounted as a valid process and consequently devalued.

The reality is the workplace provides the environment for people to make mistakes and to correct them. It is this process that is fundamental to effective learning and vitally important in developing competence to perform tasks in a specific job role. The modern approach has been to leave the workplace and attend training.

One of the major influences that led to the devaluing of on-the-job learning has been the focus on the word “Training”. Governments, bureaucracies and industry have developed training packages, established qualifications for trainers and assessors, and invested large amounts of money to support training providers and business to train industry people albeit with poor results.

Without getting into an argument about the best way to transfer knowledge, on-the-job or off-the-job learning, it is the workplace where the adaption of skills and knowledge is confirmed when it comes to developing competence.

Therefore, people need to initially appreciate that all forms of learning can contribute to an individual’s job performance however the workplace is fundamental to effective skill development and cannot be discounted.

The issue is there has not been a simple method to define and record learning applied in the context of achieving competency that underpins expected performance in a job role.
