Well, this was a pretty surreal moment, seeing myself and Gnarly Knots in this month’s Port Macquarie Focus Magazine.

I’m incredibly honoured to have been featured as their Artist of the Month and to have the opportunity to share a little more about how Gnarly Knots started, why I love working with timber and what goes into creating each piece.

What started with a love of making things has grown into something I’m incredibly proud of, and a huge part of that is because of the people in our local community.

To everyone who has trusted me with a project, recommended Gnarly Knots to someone, followed along, liked or shared a post, or simply stopped for a chat about timber, thank you. It genuinely means a lot.

Sometimes you don’t need a brand-new kitchen - you just need the right vision.

This project completely transformed an older kitchen into a bright, modern space while keeping the existing layout.

For this renovation, I had the pleasure of building and installing the custom timber benchtops, manufacturing new cabinetry and doors, and giving the entire kitchen a fresh new look. The warmth of the natural timber paired with the crisp white cabinetry has completely changed the feel of the room.

One of the most rewarding parts of my work is seeing a space go from tired and dated to somewhere a family can truly enjoy spending time together.

There’s something special about taking a single slab of timber and turning it into a piece that will be used every day.

This custom floating study desk started life as one solid slab before being carefully flattened, shaped, sanded and finished by hand.

At 3400mm long, 600mm deep and 40mm thick, it creates a workspace that will comfortably serve the client for years to come. No joins, no veneers—just one beautiful piece of Australian hardwood showcasing its natural grain from one end to the other.

Seeing it installed and fitting the room perfectly is always the best part of the job.

Thank you for trusting Gnarly Knots with another custom project. I hope this desk becomes the place where ideas are created, homework is finished and plenty of memories are made.

Some projects are about more than just building furniture—they’re about creating something that feels like it was always meant to be there.

This custom waterfall study bench was handcrafted to fit perfectly beside my client’s kitchen island, becoming part of the heart of her home.

From selecting the slab, shaping the waterfall joints, sanding and finishing, every step was done by hand to let the natural beauty of the timber speak for itself.

One of the best parts of this project was seeing how much my client appreciated the process and the finished piece. Knowing it’s found the perfect home makes all the hard work worthwhile.

Today was a good day.

I headed out to the mill to collect these two stunning slabs and, as always, spent a bit of time admiring the character hidden within the timber.

🪵 650mm x 3.7m

One of the things I love most about this craft is that every piece starts its journey long before it arrives in my workshop.

Right now, these slabs are simply beautiful pieces of timber. Soon they’ll find their place in someone’s home, where they’ll be enjoyed, shared with family and friends, and become part of everyday life.

It’s a privilege to play a small part in that journey.

This is where the real work happens.

Before any finish goes on… before it becomes a statement piece in someone’s home…
it all comes down to moments like this.

Careful glue-ups, getting everything perfectly aligned, and making sure pressure is applied evenly across the entire piece. It might not look glamorous, but it’s one of the most important stages in the whole build.

If this part isn’t done right, you’ll see it later — gaps, movement, failure over time.

At Gnarly Knots, we take our time with it. No rushing, no shortcuts. Just solid, well-built timber work designed to last for years to come.

It’s all part of creating furniture that not only looks good, but stands up to real life.
