Today was a good day.

I headed out to the mill to collect these two stunning slabs and, as always, spent a bit of time admiring the character hidden within the timber.

🪵 650mm x 3.7m

One of the things I love most about this craft is that every piece starts its journey long before it arrives in my workshop.

Right now, these slabs are simply beautiful pieces of timber. Soon they’ll find their place in someone’s home, where they’ll be enjoyed, shared with family and friends, and become part of everyday life.

It’s a privilege to play a small part in that journey.

This is where the real work happens.

Before any finish goes on… before it becomes a statement piece in someone’s home…
it all comes down to moments like this.

Careful glue-ups, getting everything perfectly aligned, and making sure pressure is applied evenly across the entire piece. It might not look glamorous, but it’s one of the most important stages in the whole build.

If this part isn’t done right, you’ll see it later — gaps, movement, failure over time.

At Gnarly Knots, we take our time with it. No rushing, no shortcuts. Just solid, well-built timber work designed to last for years to come.

It’s all part of creating furniture that not only looks good, but stands up to real life.

This custom TV unit was designed with one goal in mind — to fit seamlessly into the space while keeping a clean, modern look.

The warm natural timber brings a sense of softness to the room, while the simple shape and low profile keep everything feeling open and uncluttered. The angled legs add a subtle design feature, giving it just the right amount of character without being over the top.

Another custom project completed in the workshop this week.

This 1400mm round table was built from American Hard Maple for a client’s kids study room. The brief was to create a large shared space where the kids could sit together, spread out their books, and enjoy learning in a bright and natural environment.

Hard maple was the perfect choice for this piece. Its light tone and subtle grain work beautifully with modern interiors while also being extremely durable — ideal for a table that will see plenty of daily use from growing kids.

The large round design encourages creativity, collaboration, and makes the space feel welcoming and functional for the whole family.

Every piece we build is custom made to suit the home, the space, and the people who will use it every day.

🪵 New Project Underway 🪵

We’ve just started work on a new custom piece using American Hard Maple — a premium hardwood known for its strength, stability, and beautifully tight grain.

This timber is a favourite for high-end furniture because it machines incredibly clean, finishes beautifully, and holds up for generations. Every board is carefully selected and milled to bring out the best of the material before the build even begins.

This is only the beginning — more details and progress shots to come as the project takes shape.

Another beautiful dining table is coming together nicely.

The first coat is on and the timber is already showing off its natural character. Over the next few days we’ll be installing the legs and finishing it off, ready for its new home.

This piece has everything we love about solid timber furniture — rich grain, unique features, and no two angles the same.
