Fresh Timber Alert!

We just received a fresh batch of Marri at Ugly Duckling Timber. All seasoned 13+ years these slabs are ready to be made into something special!

With a mix of clean and gum featured, and lengths to a massive 8.1m these will be added to our ever growing stockpile.

They say curiosity killed the cat, and whilst no cats were harmed in this process, curiosity definitely killed my productivity! (I had to see what we had sourced 😅)

We have machined a small sample of what came in to see how they look. And they look fantastic! A whole mix of colours and gum feature, we also have cleaner packs for those looking for an easy DIY.

Due to the heat we are working odd hours this week (5pm till late). If you are looking for that perfect piece please get in touch!

How's everyone's Friday going? At Ugly Duckling Timber we don't have a pool, so decided the best way to cool down after hand pulling 4 ton of Jarrah sleepers in 40 degrees was to enjoy some pressure washer mist!

How's the patina on these old beauties 😍

Finally! The last slab for the year 😆

When Dylan called up and asked for a 3200x1380 timber bench top with square edges I'll bet he didn't expect the response to be "no worries mate, we can do that as a single slab and would you like a side of Burl and Birdseye with your order?" 😜 (For context to produce a square edge panel of that size we need to start with a board 1500 to 1600mm wide)

The big and unusual is our specialty at Ugly Duckling Timber. Yours Truly had been stashing this monster 6.95X 1600 Karri Slab just waiting for it to find its Forever Home.

Cut back in 2006 long before the logging ban came into place, slabs of this size will now become a thing of the past. We absolutely love bringing timber like this to the market, especially as it was only five short years ago when we started selling small offcuts and craft slabs.

This big girl will be shaped to the clients requirements by our cabinet maker then join a queue of WA Blackbutt, Marri and Jarrah at Off the Grain by J&N Designs for a full silk finish to bring up the incredible lace pattens of the Birdseye and Burls 🤤

We still have Jarrah to 6.5m, Karri to 6.95m, WA Blackbutt to 7.6m, and slabs up to 1300 wide in stock, and in January we will be taking possession of an 8m long pack of Marri slabs.

What an absolute stunner of a table this was yesterday! Custom Made for Emma and Adam, Ugly Duckling Timber supplied this monster 3100x1100 Marri slab machined to 55mm, then all the hard work was completed by Jade Off the Grain by J&N Designs on site.

We sourced these slabs from a farmers shed in Capel a few years back. Seasoned over 15 years, they have been hiding away in the back of the sheds (I forgot about them till recently!). We have more of these in lengths to 4.4m and widths to over 1m wide.

Not much needs to be said about this one, the photos tell the story! Delivered just in time for Christmas I bet this is one they will be proud to show family and friends!

When wifey said no more buying slabs this year what do you do to get your fix? Get some logs and make them yourself 😉🤣

Massive shoutout to Jeb at Oakford Transport for hauling this lot home! 🍻 A mix of Jarrah, WA Blackbutt and Sheoak, we will be unwrapping these Christmas Presents early on the 18th with the help from a local sawmiller.

The cut lumber will go into the racks to firm up future stock for us as timber becomes harder to source and the leftovers will go to firewood. Nothing gets wasted!

We are loaded with more fresh stock this week with a massive load of mixed species arriving! (I'm still working though it though 😅)

But for now, a few pics of what I have machined to get your attention 😉 some stunning River Banksia, Blackbutt, and Cyprus Pine. We have pink Jarrah, Woody Pear and Camphor on the bench too.

Ugly Duckling Timber is open tomorrow 11-2 in Neergabby. Jade has given the offcut container a refresh and we have added hundreds of new pieces including Birdseye Jarrah, Blackbutt and Salmon Gum. The shed wall is stacked with large machined panels and we have the usual shed loads of timber stock available.

Looking for a weekend activity? We will be open at Ugly Duckling Timber Neergabby Saturday 11-2.

We are massively stocked up on offcuts and small slabs having run a couple of hundred during spring cleaning this week!

We also have new stock in recycled Jarrah, mixed species hardwood 170x170 posts and super curly Marri!

The back wall of the workshop is heaving with machined slabs reedy to go as well!

Beat the Christmas rush and drop in and say hi, then grab a beer and a feed up the road at Moore River Brewing Co to top the day off 😉

At Ugly Duckling Timber Yours Truly finally got around to machining the 200 X 200 posts we have had laying around the yard for the last three years…

These posts are rare as rocking horse poo! We unearthed them a few years ago in a yard up in Karagullen. After a whole day on the bobcat extracting them from about 50 tons of other timber, we had a bobsled ride back down the hill to get them home.

I have been putting off machining them for years as they are an absolute pain to handle due to size and weight. But well worth the effort! These are incredible.

If you are looking for a show-stopping statement piece for your home, these posts would make amazing Architectural poles, or veranda/Arbor posts.

We have a mix of species, including Marri, WA Blackbutt, Wandoo and Salmon Gum in a range of lengths from 2.2 to 3.5 meters.

All have been machined to 170
X170 and are now square and dead straight ready for use.

We are asking $200-250 per meter depending on species and grade. All are 15 years dry.

At Ugly Duckling Timber we are still patiently awaiting the arrival of the spring weather! 🌞 after a few warm days this week suddenly we are back to cold, wet and windy for the weekend…

Whilst we wait for the sun to shine, the whole Team has been busy out at the yard landscaping our new fire pit area and putting the finishing touches on the jetty 😆 🍻 🔥

We salvaged a couple of fallen Tuart logs from around the Neighbourhood to make the seating which can double in purpose as an awesome little Nature Play area for the kids (when the fire is out of course!). A huge shout out to wesleyphillips1977 for dragging his Chainsaw Mill out to cap the logs.

While he was here, he couldn’t help but sow the idea that the area needed a bar… So we went digging in the sheds and found a 3500x1000 100mm thick Old Growth Jarrah Slab that we have lovingly soaked in copious amounts of Tung Oil to completely weatherproof it. Mounted on 200x200 Jarrah posts concreted into the ground, it’s not going anywhere!

Now to get back to work and finish the irrigation ready for some grass… can’t say I’m looking forward to swimming the pump out into the lake later today!

At Ugly Duckling Timber we finally took some time for R&R this weekend to celebrate wifeys birthday! I can’t remember the last time I had a day off, so was awesome to get away to Fremantle for a change of scenery!

While we were there we dropped in on a couple of clients to check out our timber in its final home. Massive shoutout to coastportbeach and georgeandivyhair for their awesome setups.

As always, Yours Truly handmade a present for wifey this year (with a some help from Jade at Off the Grain by J&N Designs). Sticking with the Fremantle theme, we set heritage jetty pegs from the Capa D’Orlando Jetty into some highly figured Wandoo I have been stashing away to make a bag rack to hang the kids bags on.

Hope you all had a great weekend and got to enjoy some sun before next weekends rain… 😣 roll on spring! ☀️

‘Imperfectly Perfect’ Timber

“Ugly Ducking Timber Co.” was founded upon a love of timber that borders upon an obsession. Where people can only see scrap or firewood we see furniture. We look beneath the ugly exterior to see the potential for beauty within. Our business name was inspired by our “Ugly Ducking” collection of cuts. When collecting bush wood sometimes a piece stands out for its uniqueness, this inspired the collection. We can't wait to begin to bring you these pieces! The cornerstone of our business is recycling WA hardwood into timeless furniture that will last generations.

Our ethos is “Making Furniture Not Firewood.” We also specialise in recovering WA Hardwood that has been earmarked to be burnt. Once this timber is gone, its gone and many of these trees are generations old. We try to preserve their heritage by taking the wood and making beautiful ‘one off’ furniture that can be enjoyed for many years to come.
