Today is a very exciting day for us! We are proud to officially announce the incorporation of Car Seat Safety Australia Inc. 🥳

CSSA Inc. was founded by five passionate child restraint professionals from across the country who share a common goal: to support, strengthen, and advance the child car seat safety industry in Australia.

While each of us continues to operate our own independent businesses, we believe there is incredible value in coming together. By collaborating, sharing knowledge, supporting one another and encouraging safest practice, we can create positive outcomes not only for industry professionals, but for the families and children we all work so hard to protect.

Car Seat Safety Australia Inc. has been established as a platform for connection, education, advocacy, and professional growth. We are committed to fostering respectful discussion, evidence-informed practice, ongoing learning and a strong, supportive professional community.

This is just the beginning!

Over the coming weeks, we will be introducing our founding members a little better, sharing more about our vision for the future and unveiling some exciting initiatives that we look forward to bringing to the Australian child restraint community.

Those who know me know that one of the things I've always been passionate about is educating and empowering families to keep their little people safe on every journey. I strongly believe that every family, regardless of their circumstances, deserves equitable access to accurate information, support, and resources when it comes to keeping their children safe in the car.

That's why I'm incredibly proud to be a founding member of Car Seat Safety Australia Inc., alongside four other amazing child restraint fitters from across the country who share the same passion for keeping children safe on Australian roads:

How does your crotch buckle look?

The left side is actually going through the slot used for crotch buckle padding.

The right is the correct placement.

Incorrect placement like this usually happens after cleaning. If you are pulling apart your seat for a clean, it's handy to take a 'before' photo.

Why do I ask you to have your child at your appointment or bring a photo of them in their current seat? To check their torso height against the height markers.

The 1 & 2 year olds in this picture are actually 11 months apart with a very similar torso height. The 4 & 5 year olds are only 6 months apart and have a very different torso height.

Legally, we need to follow the height markers on your seat. That means, regardless of their age, if they don't meet the marker to be turned from rear to forward facing, we need to leave them rear facing. Even for our bigger kids, if they aren't meeting the 5 step test, they stay in a booster. Accidents can happen any time and as drivers, it is our responsibility to keep our passengers safe.

Despite height markers being around since the 2010 standards, lots of people are still unfamiliar with them. For the most part once I've provided some education, families are happy with my recommendations but for some the conversation is challenging. I've had people cancel bookings and even drive off unhappy and you know what - that's ok. My aim is to help educate based on what evidence has shown us. I will never put a few bucks before a little person's safety.
