680 Elizabeth Street - Progress Update

🇦🇺 On site watching the talented .son as he reinstates the Australian Flag for the 680 Elizabeth Street restoration project.

The building dates back to the 20’s, the sign possibly the 80’s though very little was left of it when we started on site. Credit to Phil’s artistry, finding the faint outlines and colours of the original flag and then transferring these into a scaled hand drawing that would later be used as his reference point to repaint the flag.

The team worked hard executing targeted repair works to the front facade including render works by ._ and as well as carpentry repairs by .

Works remaining include paint stripping and repainting by , a tricky concrete lintel repair that i will help manage with as well as tuck pointing repairs.

Thank you to all the involved for your craftsmanship and your creative input!

Over the next few weeks i’ll be sharing more shots of this renovation / restoration project in Camberwell that i had the true pleasure of designing, managing and periodically acting as tradesman for. I had a lot of fun leading the project from the concept phase all the way to handover and i’m really proud to see it finished!

John Thomson Memorial Fountain, Hamilton - Project Completion

Now 107+ years old (i think), the repairs to the Hamilton Fountain structure, waterproofing, paint and detailed rendered elements will ensure it a considerably longer future ahead.

Built in 1919 to commemorate the life of the well respected John Thomson, this fountain in Hamilton was restored early this year by the team with myself as Project Manager.

Full credit to ._ and who not only executed the restoration works but also acted as my eyes and ears on site 3 hours out of Melbourne and who made a delicate process seem easy.

Thank you to and architect for trusting Abode and myself to deliver the project.

Interestingly (to me at least) the final image shows a fountain of almost identical appearance in Ararat that Abode restored some years ago now.

Old Kyneton Hospital - Project Update

This week scaffolding is complete, facade cleaned, chimneys reparged and pointed and an opening for a new lantern framed out.

With scaffolding in place I felt like a kid on Christmas day seeing the facade up close for the first time on site today, except, instead of unwrapping presents, today we were inspecting existing conditions!
The facade needs a lot of love - just as well myself and the whole crew at have a lot to give.
The beginning of a wonderful journey on this project and i’m truely enthusiastic to share the progress along the way.

Really enjoying managing this project for and client

Ricordare Photo Album

Precious things should have a special place to call home. My favourite shots live in a photo album i made earlier this year. The inlay detail matches in with the table it rests on.

St Vincent’s Heritage Wall (Dodgshun House) - Project Completion

Not just an old wall! - The plaque behind it marks this as the birthplace of Australia’s one and only Saint, Mary Mackillop born 1842.

Alongside and under the design direction of i contributed in a management capacity to complete the restoration works. The wall was partially rebuilt and structural steel retention put in place.

and Rob Peterson did a fantastic job creating pressed cement cappings that are hardly distinguishable from the existing bluestone.
faithfully restored the ornamental render features over the portico including a missing lettered sign (Edensor) previously lost to overgrown vines.

I’m not sure the quality of my sketch work lives up to the beauty of the end product from the team!

A great effort by all involved in securing another part of our built heritage.

1 - 39 Hobson Road Restoration - Project Completion

Works at Hobson Road come to a successful close this week for having completed critical restoration works to preserve the building envelope and structure of the ‘Former Glue Works’ building.

On commencement of the project several areas of the building including the roof and external brick walls had already failed and were reliant on props to keep them in place.

Site manager Hamish Ramsay led a team of skilled carpenters and masons to repair failing concrete beams and the termite ridden existing timber roof structure tying the building back together again and ensuring it remains watertight. A notable mention to &sroofing who laid new terracotta tiles and plumbing who completed stormwater connection works.

The before and after images show the approach taken to strengthen the existing oregon trusses, utilising sandwiching/sistering techniques specified by to ensure the heritage structure remained in place rather than being replaced.

Old Kyneton Hospital - Stage 2 Conservation Works

Thrilled to announce the commencement of the Stage 2 Conservation works at the Old Kyneton Hospital.
In 2025, as Project Manager for i led the Stage 1 package of works focussed on performing emergency repairs, stripping-out all non-heritage items and investigating the unknown conditions of the existing building.

This post shows critical stabilising works that were undertaken to prevent the collapse of a chimney, various hidden openings that were uncovered during demolition and historic images of Kyneton when the Old Hospital was still operational.

The Stage 2 works will see a range of new conservation scope undertaken most notably the reconstruction of the Victorian Verandah, reconstruction of Bluestone buttresses to the Chimneys and the reinstatement of a historic Roof lantern previously removed from the building.

The project represents yet another unique opportunity for us to contribute to preserving Victorias built heritage. A special thank you to client Embracia Victoria for trusting us with the important works planned ahead for their building.

St Michael’s Uniting Church - Inspiration #2

If the term ‘Skyscraper’ existed in 1866, that is what St Michaels Uniting Church would have been called at the time it was built. The historic images show how it would have dominated the corner of Russell and Collins Streets long before the skyscrapers that now surround it. Though those modern buildings now far surpass St Michaels in height, the modernist glass and steel clad facades do little to keep up with the detail and beauty of the church.

Very early on in my construction career I remember coming across the building and being overwhelmed with enamour for how beautiful it was. I would return with some 8 years later to assist in undertaking an investigation to inform a new design for the interior. The longer I’ve taken to study the facade at St Michaels, the more I’ve found. The facade itself feels lively to me in comparison to most buildings of the time. Reed balances classic ideals of proportion, symmetry and elegant presentation with the playfulness of variety in colour and decorative form.

St Michaels is commonly accepted as Melbourne’s first building to feature Polychromatic Brickwork (multicoloured) and architects across Melbourne celebrated what Reed achieved here by reflecting his design in their own. In the 1870s and 80s, Polychrome brickwork exploded in popularity with many Victorian homes choosing to create beauty in pattern through the use of distinctly contrasting brick colours, a method that Reed pioneered.

Reed was also famously influenced by Northern Italian Architecture and this can perhaps be best seen at St Michaels in his design of the Campanile (a term for bell tower) that holds an unmistakable resemblance in form and appearance to the St Marks Bell Tower in Venice.

Unique enough to kickstart a new wave of decorative design in Melbourne shortly after its construction, Reeds building has been deservingly placed on the Victorian Heritage Register to protect its architectural and cultural significance.
