Hartley Hall Markets One of Australia’s largest home-made, homegrown markets in the historical town of Hall.

The Hartley Hall Markets is now one of Australia’s largest homemade and homegrown goods markets. The markets have a rural theme and are held at the picturesque Hall Village Showground, just 10 kilometers north of Canberra. The markets have grown dramatically since 1987 with just 36 stalls and a 20-cent entry fee with some of the original stallholders still going strong. Since the first gathering many thousands of people have made visiting the Hartley Hall Markets a family tradition. Friendly atmosphere and great bargains to be found, the Hartley Hall Markets offer the best of fresh produce, baked goods, plants, furniture, clothing, pottery, jewellery, children’s toys, crafts, unique gifts, and much more. Barbeques, canteens, live music and other entertainment makes each visit a fun, family day out. Entry is by a gold coin donation helping fund Hartley Lifecare’s disability services. The Hartley Hall Markets are held from 10am to 3pm on the first Sunday of every month except January.

People with disability are part of the community you come to Hall to enjoy. They are also the reason our Markets exist. Every market day raises funds for people with disability in Canberra through Hartley Lifecare.

So when Jamie Larsen, Hartley’s communications intern, talks about how people treat him, there is something for all of us to take into our next market day.

Jamie is a university student, powerchair soccer player and Dungeons and Dragons fan. Yet people often ask his support worker what he wants, instead of asking him.

His advice: "Treat them like a person first."

Whether you are shopping, running a stall or volunteering, a conversation starts the same way: say hello and speak to the person. If you think someone needs help, ask first and listen.

Thank you to Region Canberra for sharing Jamie’s words. Read “Assume the highest: Jamie’s simple advice on seeing the person first” here: https://region.com.au/assume-the-highest-jamies-simple-advice-on-seeing-the-person-first/1001401/?
