in 1901 Lieutenant Leslie Maygar became the sixth and last Australian to be awarded the Victoria Cross during the Boer War.
Maygar was awarded the Victoria Cross when he rode out under heavy fire and rescued a soldier whose horse was shot out from underneath him. Magyar went on to serve on Gallipoli during the First World War, and was mortally wounded at Beersheba.
