Two new throne chairs for The University of Melbourne’s to add to the ceremonial furniture suite I made in 2007. The lectern was back in the workshop for some restoration work. Twelve years on from the first commission, where I designed and made four throne chairs, I was asked to make an additional pair. Fortunately I had hung onto the templates and set out drawings so the task was less daunting. There’s definitely an up side to initially over ordering material as it was great to be able to use some of the same timber I used on the original chairs. There is real attention to detail being able keep continuity of colour and grain on the arms, front legs, rails and the slats on the lumber support.

Had the chance to catch up with an old friend 12 years on. I delivered four redgum carver chairs to sit alongside the three throne chairs I made 12 years ago for Deakin University, Geelong and was so pleased to see the throne chairs again and in perfect condition!
