As we become more and more environmentally conscious, the awareness around ‘green solutions’ is building day to day. In the building industry, we’re seeing a huge shift towards utilising elements like the sun for power and heating, as well as reducing the carbon footprint wherever possible.

At Canberra Sustainable Decks (CSD) we love using recycled materials as they can offer so much characteristic and offer a piece of history right in your very own home. This is the most sustainable way to use beautiful Australian timbers like blackbutt without having a detrimental effect on the environment. Some timbers can be kept in their original state, re-sawn or dressed depending on the look you are after. The Extinction of Merbau

Merbau is a tropical hardwood timber commonly used for decking and flooring across the world. Many select Merbau for decking for its strength, durability and colour characteristics. The tree is a slow growing species that generally reaches maturity at 80 years of age. It was originally found in Eastern Africa and Southern India and Southeast Asia. Commercial logging of the hard wood both legally and illegally has reduced the species by 60%. The remaining Merbau ranges have already been allocated for logging. It is estimated the remaining Merbau will be completely gone within the next 35 years. This figure only considers legal logging not illegal logging. Illegal logging increases destruction and the speed in which Merbau will be depleted. Extinction of a single species can have a knock on effect for entire ecosystems.

At Canberra Sustainable Decks we do not use products such as Merbau that have been logged from Indonesia and other foreign countries. It is well documented that these products are drastically depleting the planet of its natural forests, which is having an irreversible effect on wildlife habitats. Unfortunately so many people are not aware of this type of destruction. We aim to educate people about the effect of deforestation. Reducing the demand will reduce supply, every little bit helps.
