Yesterday was my first time ever demonstrating turning in front of a paying audience, at Turnfest 2026 in Queensland. I’ve been showing people how I turn an egg from a block of timber, and how I turn pens (along with a bunch of tips/tricks/troubleshooting advice).
I confess I was nervous as hell - while I am a high school maths teacher by qualification and experience, I’ve not done anything like this before. But everyone’s been super supportive, I didn’t have anything major go wrong, and I’m getting a lot of relevant questions, so I’ll count this as a win.
Round 2 starts in about 15 minutes. Hopefully people watching will come away with something useful (and may Athena, patron goddess of teachers and artisans, watch over me and help everything run smoothly!)

My last market in March is the tonight from 5.30pm - 10.30pm.
Just this morning I was in the shed, working on some lovely ballpoint pens. I have one in Australian Sandalwood, one in Golden Wattle, and two in Queen Ebony. I also have a limited number of Huon Pine decorative eggs as well as a few in red gum.
Now I’m waiting for the road to close so I can set up my stall, and having a cheeky flavoured milk in the process 😁
My next market won’t be until May - so, come on over to Ebenezer Place in Adelaide’s East End and pick up some goodies!

The calm before the storm…
Waiting for Ebenezer Place to be closed to traffic, so I can set up my market stall. Thankfully I’ve had enough practice that it’s pretty quick, even when flying solo.
This special long weekend Sunday edition of the kicks off tonight in the Adelaide CBD at 5.30pm, and wraps up at 10.30pm. Plenty of good food and drink, great music, and interesting things being sold!
This is the second-to-last market for Adsum Richer Things this month before I head up to Queensland for Turnfest!) - so why not swing by and say hello? ☺️

Back at my lathe for the first time since breaking my right scaphoid in January (got the all-clear yesterday - yay!)
And I’m wasting no time whatsoever…there’s muscle memory to get back, things to make for upcoming markets, and a woodturning conference to prepare for!
To get a feel for the tools again, I started with a simple wand in American Ash. It served to remind me just how whippy wand blanks get in the middle; it makes turning the middle an utter pain in the proverbial! (And a LOT more sanding than I’d like…😖) Note to self: investigate steady rests and experiment with using one.
Then to get a feel for fine work with the skew chisel, I turned a pen in Huon Pine. The picture and photo show the finish I got off the tool, before I started sanding - for a nearly three-month hiatus, I’ll take it!
Market Dates:
This long weekend I’ll be at the Ebenezer Night Markets (Ebenezer Place, in the Adelaide CBD) on Saturday 7th AND Sunday 8th March, 5.30-10.30pm.
I’ll also be at the Ebenezer Night Markets next weekend (Sat 14th March), 5.30-10.30pm.
Then it’s back into the shed to practice like crazy, because at the end of March I’m heading up to Sea World Resort in Queensland for Turnfest. I’ll be demonstrating how I turn my eggs and pens in the clinic area next to the pop-up shop. I’m a little nervous because it’s my first time demonstrating (and I’ve been out of practice because of the broken hand/wrist 😖)…hopefully the old teacher brain kicks into gear.

Been a bit quiet since Christmas (a broken hand didn’t help!) but it’s time to get back to work!
My first market dates for the new year are the Ebenezer Night Markets, just off Union St in the city. Starting this Saturday, you can find us in Ebenezer Place on the following dates and times:
* Saturday 21 Feb, 5.30pm - 10.30pm
* Saturday 28 Feb, 5.30pm - 10.30pm
* Saturday 7 Mar, 5.30pm - 10.30pm
* Sunday 8th Mar, 5.30pm - 10.30pm
* Saturday 14 Mar, 5.30pm - 10.30pm
Everything at the Adsum Richer Things stall is hand made by me or AdsumDad in our workshops, right here in Adelaide - like the segmented bowl in the second photo. Made with ash and featuring blackwood and maple accents, it measures 27cm in diameter and 11cm high - the perfect size for a small fruit bowl.

…and breathe.
This past weekend marked the most successful market in ART’s short history. Three days of utter madness - I want to thank for putting on the event. I think it’s safe to say you’ll see me again next year in Hahndorf.
I also want to thank the tens of thousands (!!!) of people who came by to shop and support local makers and artisans. You help us put food on the table and to keep doing what we love to do, and that is a treasure beyond price.
After any big market season, you need to buy more supplies for the next round of making. In my case, that means making a trip to ! Located in Beverley SA, this is one of the places I go to if I want interesting timber for turning. The first two photos above are just the tiniest fraction of the species they sell. It really is my happy place. 😊
Of course, sometimes you have a customer request for a timber that’s a bit harder to come by. In the event that my preferred supplier doesn’t have what I want/need, I go hunting…which is how I came across these pieces of Australian Sandalwood (last photo). It’s in the same genus as Indian Sandalwood, but with a lower santalol content. It’s still going to smell AMAZING when I put it on the lathe - I can’t wait! 😍

Two and a half hours until the Christmas Market opens here in Hahndorf!
I’m very excited to announce that Adsum Richer Things will be offering while-you-wait laser-engraved personalisation of selected small items in our stall, for an additional charge.

ONE sleep until the Christmas Market in Hahndorf. It all kicks off at 5pm tomorrow, so come on down and get yourself some handmade presents this festive season.
I got a bit silly with my little laser engraver, and made a run of ‘round tuits’ in sugar gum. If you’ve got a friend or loved one that says they’ll do a particular job ‘when they get around to it’…give them one of these. That way, they’ll have no excuse. 🤭😆

TWO more sleeps until the Christmas Market in Hahndorf!
I like repurposing timber where I can. These little Christmas trees were made from…a Christmas tree. My family gets a live pine tree every year from Make A Wish at the Norwood Hotel. I saved the trunk from last year’s tree, and it’s now been made into eight little trees! How’s that for a bit of Christmas magic…
