Instead of asking what things are made from, she looks at how design can activate craft knowledge, skills, and networks of making.

Working with wood and metal, Nethra collaborates with craftspeople from South Asian communities in the UAE, recognising generational skills that continue to shape the process.

A closer look at the working environment of the Tanween 2026 cohort.

From sketchbooks and material samples to conversations, testing and early mock-ups, the studio becomes a space where ideas are questioned, adjusted and developed through making.

من دفاتر الملاحظات وعينات المواد إلى النقاشات والاختبارات والنماذج الأولية، يتحوّل الاستوديو إلى مساحة تُطرح فيها الأسئلة، وتُراجع الأفكار، وتتطور من خلال الصنع.

اجتمع أعضاء دفعة تنوين 2026 لمشاركة أبحاثهم ومناقشة أفكارهم الأولية، إلى جانب تلقي الملاحظات والتوجيهات من المرشدين وزملائهم في البرنامج.

توفر هذه الجلسات مساحة للحوار النقدي والتأمل والتجريب، بما يدعم التطور المستمر لكل مشروع مع تقدّم مراحل العمل عليه.

As part of the Tanween by Tashkeel 2026 programme, the cohort took part in a guided bus tour led by Make Works UAE , exploring Dubai’s manufacturing and production ecosystem.

From material suppliers and fabrication facilities to specialist manufacturers, the visit offered insight into the processes, systems, and expertise that support design development at scale.

By connecting designers directly with local industry, the tour provided valuable context for the cohort’s ongoing research, material exploration, and product development.

في إطار برنامج تنوين من تشكيل لسنة 2026، شارك أعضاء الدفعة في جولة ميدانية نظمتها «ميك ووركس الإمارات» لاستكشاف منظومة التصنيع والإنتاج في دبي.

شملت الجولة زيارة موردي المواد، ومرافق التصنيع، والمصنعين المتخصصين، مما أتاح للمشاركين فهماً أعمق للعمليات والأنظمة والخبرات التي تدعم تطوير المنتجات والتصميم على نطاق واسع.

ومن خلال ربط المصممين مباشرة بقطاع التصنيع المحلي، وفّرت الجولة سياقاً عملياً يدعم أبحاث الدفعة الحالية، واستكشاف المواد، وتطوير المنتجات.

Meet the Tanween Mentors.

From design development and sustainability to manufacturing and production, Tanween mentors support the cohort in transforming ideas into meaningful design outcomes.

Working closely with the designers throughout the programme, they provide guidance on creative direction, material exploration, industry engagement, and product development—encouraging approaches that respond to cultural, environmental, and societal contexts.

تعرّفوا على مرشدي تنوين.

من تطوير التصاميم والاستدامة إلى التصنيع والإنتاج، يرافق مرشدو تنوين أعضاء الدفعة في تحويل الأفكار إلى مخرجات تصميمية ذات معنى.

ومن خلال العمل المباشر مع المصممين طوال البرنامج، يقدّم المرشدون التوجيه في مجالات التطوير الإبداعي، واستكشاف المواد، والتواصل مع قطاع التصنيع، وتطوير المنتجات، بما يشجع على إيجاد حلول تستجيب للسياقات الثقافية والبيئية والمجتمعية.

Nethra Ganesan is an architect, maker, and spatial practitioner working at the intersection of adaptive reuse, material research, and sustainable exhibition design.

Her practice draws from community-led making and customary knowledge, exploring how local materials and systems can be recontextualised into scalable, sustainable design frameworks.

نيثرا غانيسان مهندسة معمارية، ومصممة، ومختصة في التصميم المكاني، تعمل في مجال إعادة الاستخدام التكيفي، وبحوث المواد، وتصميم المعارض المستدامة.
